iPad 2 with activation lock in place

Avatar David Fleetwood
We have unearthed an old iPad 2 which we gave to our son many years ago but which has lain unused for ages. Unfortunately he linked it to an Apple ID using an old email, which he cannot remember, despite multiple suggestions/threats from us.
There seems no 'official' way of removing this lock without the ID & password but there are adverts for software which supposedly 'does the trick' eg EaseUSMobUnlock. Does anyone have any experience of this type of software and are they safe to use?

What a stew... Have you looked at this Apple support article? ? There are a lot of references to this issue on-line...

Sorry to be a while reporting back on this issue - hours spent watering the garden!
The You Tube video refers to unlocking an iPad when the device passcode has been forgotten but our problem is the Activation Lock put on when the device is linked to 'Find my ....'.It stops someone that has pinched the device from using it but has caught us out as well! It seems the only time Apple will step in to help, is if you have the receipt for the purchase of the iPad and can prove ownership, sadly our receipt was binned a long time ago. The lesson is to keep the receipts while you still have the iPad/iPhone. Anyway thanks to Euan and Doug for their replies.
