This is an advisory of a problem

If you have just installed any of these new drives Model Number ST31000340AS please check with the Seagate forum for details of a failure that causes the drive to not be recognised by the computer.

fortunately I had just ensured that I had two up to date back up copies of the system created just before the drive failed.
