When away from an internet connection both Apple and Google Maps have started showing a blank screen on my iPhone, with only the disc indicating my position, but no map detail. Strangely, on some occasions the Waze app does show the map detail. Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a cure?
In Settings go down to Maps and select 'Mobile Data On'. For some reason, a recent update turns it off, maybe to reduce battery drain when the overall Mobile Data is 'on'.
Google maps allows you to download maps to your phone so that you can use them whilst offline. This is very helpful when abroad. Tap the three lines in the top left corner and select 'offline maps'. You can then select the exact area to download. The larger the area to bigger the download.
