Start-up problem with G5 Tower

Avatar Roy Rainford
A friend in Surrey has a problem with his Mac who I would like to help if possible. I wonder if there is a posting in the archives that might be useful or an external link? He has a G5 Tower (non Intel) running 10.5..... (he thinks!) bought new in 2005. Recently there has been clicking sounds, presumably from the drive and now he can't boot up. He gets as far as the chimes and nothing more. Any tips &/or links would be appreciated. Roy.

that ticking noise may well be the disk heads trying to find their first track on the disk- if the ticking is somewhat random, then the drive is probably working but in trouble and needing a reformat. if you can start the machine from a different disc you may be able to find it with disc utility, and repair it or format it, but I suspect the drive has had a hardware failure.

Thanks Gordon. I will pass the info to friend but I know that although he has an external drive he hasn't cloned the Tower drive unfortunately. Perhaps he can use his MacBook.
