Dorchester — Dec 8th 2009

Our meeting was, as usual, opened by John, with 13 members present.

David of purbecmacsupport.com gave us a very well researched presentation on Google Apps and Services. The first to be discussed was Google mail, which could very easily be set up to work with the Apple Mail application, and, with EMAP, was very suitable for use when more than one mac was used to access a single mail account. He also explained the benefits of Google Docs as an alternative to Microsoft Office, or Open Office. This application is used from a remote server, where documents created are stored, and accessed. Other, more conventional mac-based applications include Google Quick Search Box, which allows searches of the web, personal web history, and of your computer, Picasa for the Mac, which allows photos to be stored, accessed, and edited, and Chrome, the new web browser.

Details of these can be found at google.com/mac, nd google.com/apps. All that is needed is a google mail account, which can be opened on line. David also has produced a comprehensive set of explanatory notes, which are available at http://purbeckmacsupport.com/wamug

After a pause at the Colliton Club bar, and the presentation of celebratory artefacts from Euan, Tom then told us more on the subject of Picasa, and how, thanks to the introduction of new TV's from Panasonic, Sony and some other manufacturers, TV's with ethernet connectors built-in could be used for direct access to the internet via a router, to a range of sites of general interest, including Picasa. This enabled pictures to be shared with an audience, and across the extended family if desired.
