Fareham — Jun 8th 2019

12 of us were at this meeting when Tony Still gave us a presentation on ‘Back To Basics in Pages’, the Document Processor from Apple. He said that Pages was released in 2005 with iWork, the suite of programmes that included Numbers and Keynote and continues to work in Mojave.
Version 5 was released in 2013 with the emphasis on iOS for iPad use. This removed some features from the Mac version though. In 2018 key features were returned.
Pages is now at version 8 on the Mac and version 5 on iOS so works on the Mac, iPhone and iPad and is included free.

It is also available as a Web app through iCloud, runs in the browser window and is useful for collaboration.
It reads and writes Word files and is very powerful.

Tony went on to demonstrate how to create a new document using the included templates, showing us the Template Chooser Screen.
He picked the Classic Letter template and showed us how to work on it to make it our own document, going through how to get the Format menu up and showing us the different options.

Someone asked about Word Documents and Tony said pages can work on these and walked us through the different formats you can get when using the ‘Export To’ menu.

Tony showed us how to apply ’Styles’ to easily change the format in order to keep consistency through the whole document. He covered how to bring up Guide lines, how to add Pictures, Instant Alpha, how to save a Template of your own for future use amongst a lot of other useful features.

I think everyone agreed that Pages was far more useful than they had previously thought and the members who haven’t used it yet are certainly going to give this powerful Document Processor a try.

Afterwards, Euan gave us a quick update on things Apple will likely release in September, the MacOS Catalina, a new iPad OS and a new MacPro.
