Beaminster — Mar 6th 2018

There was a good turnout – 16 members and 2 visitors – to hear Michael and David Moon go through the abilities of a selection of free messaging apps. There are over 70 available of which 50 are for the Mac and 39 for iOS. The facilities varied, with all apps able to send and receive text messages, and the majority able to send and receive audio and video calls. It is also possible to call and text landline numbers though these have to be paid for. One pinpoints your current position on a map that the recipient can see, one allows conference calls with up to 250 participants (the mind boggles!) The apps looked at were Messages and Facetime, from Apple, which we all have on all our Apple kit, and WhatsApp and Viber. All need to be learned, to take advantage of the different abilities, and there was obviously not the time for a session to do this. However the second part of the presentation was for people to try their hand at making video and audio calls to each other –with mixed results.
Happy chaos!
