Fareham — Jun 10th 2017

There were 13 members at this meeting and John gave us a presentation covering 3 topics.

He began with On-line Banking, this basically allows you to access your account details and statements from your own bank or building society, and to carry out transactions like transferring money or paying bills etc. The main advantages are… 24/7 accessibility, portability away from home, easy to use and it’s free!
iOS devices could benefit from installing the appropriate bank or building society apps, these allow a quicker login procedure.
John explained various precautions to take and emphasised that it was safer to use cellular networks rather than Wifi hotspots.
Many banks have suggested that their customers should use Trusteer Rapport software to give end-to-end security, but there was some uncertainty about it, since the software package didn’t always keep up with the latest versions of Safari and Firefox.

Next, John covered the procedure for Buying on-line, explaining the possible delivery methods, such as postal, collection point (Amazon Lockers), click & collect and (in the case of software) download to your computer.
We then discussed the best way of paying for goods, either by using a credit card (which gives extra protection) or by PayPal.
John said it was always important to log out of a website if previously logged in, although sometimes it was very difficult to find the log-out button to click.

After the break, John went over the various types of download, split into two categories - system software and user software.
Any system software, including updates, for your Apple devices could be easily downloaded from the app store.
However, for protection purposes, non-Apple software is dependent on a setting in System Preferences in order to run.
John demonstrated how difficult it could be sometimes to download a user manual, especially when there were several download buttons shown but no obvious ones to click. In this case, all the download buttons were for other things, and the correct procedure was to click on a certain pdf link!

There were lots of questions throughout the talk, including a discussion about accidentally downloading unwanted software, such as Mackeeper (not recommended), and then the correct way to get rid of it. Another discussion was about the best way to store passwords and to use keychain.
Finally the Q&A session covered… a slow-running Macbook, fibre broadband and transferring photos from iOS to Mac.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 8th July, starting at 10.30am now back in Classroom E2.
