Fareham — May 13th 2017

We've now settled back permanently into our previous meeting room, Classroom E2, and there were 8 members attending this time.

John Lemon from the Beaminster group gave us an excellent talk about ViewRanger.
This is an App that was created by Ordnance Survey, and allows you to view very detailed maps on the iPad and iPhone, as well as on other smart phones.
There is an extensive range of maps in addition to Great Britain, including USA, Canada, New Zealand and much of Europe.
The App is free and you can also download free the basic map showing all the regions. You can then choose an area by buying the necessary tiles, each one covering either 5km or 10km square, depending on the type of map required.
Predictably, the cost is cheaper than the paper version, especially when you want an area between four corners of the traditional paper maps.
Assuming that you've already bought some maps, the display will automatically switch from small to large scale as you zoom in, thereby showing more detail.
In the centre of your display, the cross wires will show any location with its 10 figure grid reference or if preferred, as latitude and longitude.
There are many walking routes that can be superimposed, and you can easily save your own ones.

Finally, John showed us a feature called Skyline, whereby the key geographical features, such as hills on the horizon, have their names superimposed on the view from the camera on your device.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 10th June, starting at 10:30am as usual.
