Fareham — May 14th 2016

Eleven people, including one guest, attended this meeting.

John gave a talk explaining the terms: Downloading, Uploading, Updating, Streaming and Syncing, all of which actually perform a similar task of copying data from one device to another. Data that is downloaded from the internet would be either stored as a file, or only temporarily stored in a cache.
He mentioned that whenever we're using the Internet, we're either downloading or uploading data in some form or other.
Streaming media, such as from YouTube will be temporarily saved in a buffer, however, streaming live data such as from Facetime, will not be saved at all.
He then described some more terms ending with -ing, namely: Importing, Exporting and Ripping, all of which involved processing the data to make the format compatible with other software. And finally, Upgrading - which could refer to hardware or software.

After the break, Jeanette gave us a fascinating insight into her 10 rod allotment (about 25 square metres) by showing us some of her vast collection of more than 400 photos taken on her iPad and iPhone. She also showed us some short movies of insects and birds as well as a time-lapse video, done with the iPad, of a Death's Head Hawkmoth pumping up its wings after emerging from its pupal case.
She grows quite a range of vegetables and fruit, including melons in her allotment polytunnel and greenhouse.
Because Jeanette tries to grow in an organic way, she doesn't spray herbicides or pesticides, therefore she sees lots of birds and insects on her plot and even allows them to share some of her crops!
Hopefully, we'll have another Natural History session from Jeanette sometime in the future.

The Q&A session included questions about Safari not working properly on Lion, upgrading to El Capitan, and incompatible Microsoft files on a Mac.

The next meeting will be as usual on the second Saturday of the month, 11th June, starting at 10.30am.
