Fareham — Feb 21st 2015

We had a good attendance of 15, including several new faces.

John talked us through several basic iPad features and then explained how to take a steady photo by using one of the volume control buttons. Then how to attach a photo to an email. He then covered the procedure for installing an App and how to update one.

Next, he demonstrated how to pair a bluetooth keyboard with an iPad, and mentioned the many advantages, including the obvious ones of all keys visible and no wires. Other advantages were that the text cursor could be moved using the arrow keys, the function keys could quickly control the brightness and the volume of the iPad, and there are now lots of Mac keyboard shortcuts that could be used.

Then he showed us the easy way to connect an iPad to a TV, and played back a movie of the group recorded a few minutes earlier.

After the break, Derek uncovered some of the less well known features of Preview.
He started by showing us how to fill in details on a PDF form and adding a signature captured from the built in iSight camera on his Macbook, thus avoiding having to print and scan the form.

He also demonstrated how to insert bookmarks into PDF manuals and how to add comments and annotations to map images and photos.

Derek also showed us how the various image formats could be edited for both colour and size, and then exported into other formats. Also, if the original camera had included location details in the EXIF data, these could be transferred and shown in the Maps application.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 21st March at 10.30am.
