Lionel Ogden gave the members a talk on Data Backup and specifically the need for offline or remote backup. He reviewed the various online services available from many companies. Usually these services are free until a specific value of data is stored, then the prices vary.

Concerns with online storage services are:
The data upload speed from the local computer to the remote server, even fibre connected machines would experience quite a delay in the initial upload unless significant effort is made into selecting the data to be uploaded.

The location of the backup data determines the laws that the data can be subject to eg temporary confiscation or total loss in the event of businesses failing.

We then considered more feasible techniques for Joe Public to use:

Storing a drive off site - ie in the shed at the bottom of the garden, or in the neighbours house, or if the shed (if powered) or neighbours house is within WiFi range then use a Time capsule connected to the local network for automatic backup.

The session then covered the use of various Genealogical products, the use of a 4G source to improve internet connectivity for the meetings, Bash etc.
