Bournemouth — Dec 9th 2013

A good crowd of 14 gathered for the last Bournemouth meeting of the year, all eagerly anticipating Mick Burrell's talk on Mavericks. All except Mick that is. Apparently it had slipped his mind that he was the star turn and so didn't have his laptop with him. Fortunately Apple technology came to the rescue and Mick presented his i-Cloud hosted Keynote presentation using his iPhone.

After outlining the process of downloading and installing Mavericks, Mick gave us a quick run through of its main features, augmented by his own experiences of using some of them. This experience was generally positive , although naturally we tended to concentrate on those areas where things don't quite work as expected, such as the Styles facility in Pages which seems to be broken in the new version. Also, although support for multiple displays has been improved, it still seems to behave unpredictably. Mick had found that unticking the 'Displays have separate Spaces' box in Mission Control Preferences enabled the Presenter's Display facility in Keynote to work properly - not a lot of use when presenting on an iPhone though!

iCloud Keychain is a new feature which Mick hadn't yet explored. It turned out that nobody present had either and there was some discussion about the possible security implications. A topic for a future meeting perhaps?

After a short break, we watched a video of Steve Jobs speaking in 1980 - in the days of Apple II and Visicalc - on his vision for the future of personal computing. A fascinating insight into the man, the shaky black and white, scan converted video contriving to make the talk seem even more historic.

David Fleetwood then ran a short quiz, which generated much amusement and confusion, culminating in the presentation of a box of chocolates and a wooden spoon to those deemed to to have come first and last.

Finally, a card and Christmas cake were presented to the staff of Solutions in recognition of their kind hospitality over the year.

Although the meeting closed before it could be said, we would like to record, on behalf of the Bournemouth group, our thanks for all the hard work that our convenor Alan Cox has put in over the year to make the meetings so enjoyable as well as informative - T. & M.H.
