This month 11 members came to listen to Andy Banks talk on Automator and also a photo GPS tagging application.

Andy introduced the meeting to the Automator application in Mac OS X, he showed us how by a drag and drop methodology one can create a workflow of repetitive tasks. Andy has used it for generating test emails when he has been testing a mail process.

Automator works with most Apple software as well MS Office and Adobe Photoshop and other non Apple products.

A useful reference web site for Automator is

http://www.macosxautomation.com

where there are demo videos, you may have to wait a while for the videos to load.

However to exploit Automator you have to have an identified a repetitive task that is required to be automated.

Andy then went on to talk about "gps4cam" an iPhone and a Mac OSX application that is used to add GPS information (Geo Tag) to the Meta Data fields found in digital images. The iPhone app is £1.99.

The process is:
1 - To launch gps4cam on the iPhone and press the ‘Start a new trip’ button.
2 - At the end of the trip, press the ‘Export’ button, which will generate a 2D bar code (QR code). Take a picture with the camera of this screen.
3 - To upload the pictures on your mac or pc, you can use gps4cam desktop (free download from the gps4cam.com website). This software will geotag automatically the pictures.

This topic kicked off a wide ranging discussion on the various geotagging tools for digital images from the use of iPhones, camera specific loggers that update the file in the camera to using stand a lone data loggers or car GPS devices. As well as the usage and abusage of QR codes (Quick Response).

So thanks to Andy for leading us into an interesting area of discussion and investigation.

Next month the topic will be Keyboard Shortcuts.
