Bournemouth — Mar 15th 2011

An interesting evening revolving around the attributes and worth of MobileMe - ably demonstrated by Marco of Solutions. The discussions went on to cover a wider range, amongst other subjects touched on a comparison between SuperDuper and Time Machine. This was to the detriment of the former, as the argument in favour of Time Machine is that it does not interfere with the layout of the hard drive sectors, something which is apparently done by SuperDuper (and Carbon Copy Cloner too).

Several problems were solved during the course of the discussions and (always the sign of a good meeting) we were finally politely reminded that time was up by the long-suffering staff at Solutions.

Another good thing that came out of the evening was the presentation to those present of discount cards for"Mates Rates" at Solutions, to which all WAMUG members are entitled. So be sure to come to the next meeting and get yours! we will be talking - or rather Solutions will be - about the abilities of GarageBand and LogicPro. Applications that are used by a minority of our members but worth exploring under the guidance of Solutions.

Sadly not at the meeting - but as far as I am concerned Superduper wins over Time machine is that I am able to boot directly from the back up drive, with TM I have to find another drive and then reinstall OSX and reload from TM.

I understand the that files should be in their optimum location on the boot drive to maximise performance, but as I only have OSX and Application executables on the boot drive I do not get the clutter of other files impacting the boot drive.

I'm with Derek on this. SuperDuper has been a real saviour for me on a couple of occasions when internal hard drives have failed. I'm more than happy to take a hit on performance, for the peace of mind it gives.
