We started the meeting with what was hopefully a solution to an iPhoto issue and then carried on to offer advice about which to purchase - iPad2, MacBook Air or the basic MacBook. We were all chipping in with various pros and cons so I'm not sure Michael is any further forward but we should see what decision he made next time!

Several of us knew that Disc Utility cannot repair the disc it's running from (hence the recommended way of repairing your internal disc is to run Disc Utility from an install DVD) but Doug showed us a script (AppleJack) which can. AppleJack is a free download and performs other maintenance routines as well as disc repairs. We had Doug's laptop connected to the projector so we could watch while he put it through its paces but we'd forgotten that single user mode (which AppleJack runs in) doesn't allow external video so we all crowded round his machine! Fortunately for Doug, AppleJack found no errors.
