Fareham — Jul 30th 2011

We had nine attendees at the meeting.
The formal topic was given by Alan Lewer on Geocaching using an iPhone 4
.
The principles of Geocaching being a search and find activity for hidden caches containing information or logs to prove that the cache has been found. A database of caches and their locations can be found on

Geocaching.com

the location data being downloaded to the iPhone and then used to locate the cache.
Alan explained how it was a good recreational activity that can involve his family in getting out in the fresh air and getting a bit of exercise.

Alan illustrated the talk with images of the iPhone displaying map and routing information to enable him to find the cache.

The principles of Geocaching are detailed on the following web site.

What is Geocaching

The use of other GPS devices was described as well with a reminder to set any car GPS devices to off road use to avoid following the mapped roads.

There was a discussion on Lion and the ways of installing it on the machine and still preserving the install package and also providing a methodology to install the product on a an empty machine. These topics are well discussed on the WAMUG discussion forum.

Finally we had a “business section” in which David Teale requested that he stood down being the contact person and looked around for nominations to take his place. At a subsequent meeting in a “smoke filled” car park Andy Banks volunteered to assist in running the section so he and Derek Wright will try and run the section.

Next month we will be running a Lion taming session so please bring along your tales of successes and problems.
