Fareham — Jan 30th 2010

We had 14 members in attendance this month. Terry kicked off the meeting with a demo of an ION USB Turntable which is used to digitise your vinyl collection (on loan from our Membership Secretary, Michael Corgan). Using the software Final Vinyl, Terry showed us that the process is fairly straightforward yet time consuming, especially if you have a large number of records.

After the hot drinks and doughnuts we began discussing the iPad, with the majority having high opinions of it. At the request of a member we talked about the Magic Mouse, which got high praise from our Webmaster Chris for it's Multi-Touch abilities. We then moved on to more open-ended discussions on various problems the members were having.

A very interesting demo Terry. Nice to see that you also appreciate one of the true pioneers of Rock-n-Roll.

Since the meeting, I found that a friend had bought a very basic ION turntable. It was supplied with 'ez audio converter'. This software is simplicity itself. It even puts up dialogue boxes to input the album title, artist and track titles. Then puts it directly into iTunes. The big downside is that it gives no facility for tinkering, other than levels, and on the friends G4, it appears to crash a lot. I tried it on an Intel Mac Mini, with no problem. However, unless you get it included with a turntable, I don't think, I'd want to pay for it.

If you're prepared to splash out on shareware, it seems VinylStudio 7.01 has good reviews and is well supported by its author. According to one of the reviews, it even has online database look-up for track titles.
