Dorchester — Feb 9th 2010

John introduced the meeting with 27 members and prospective members present - something of a record for WAMUG - unless anyone knows better!

Mick gave a demonstration of Pages - part of the iWork suite, which was aimed at new users. Pages comes supplied with many useful templates, but Mick showed us how to set up a new letter format in Pages from scratch using the Inspector, and then went on to show how a simple, but attractive newsletter could be laid out with text boxes and text, in columns, wrapped around graphics. Although one could see the programme's origins in Claris Works, there appeared to be a more intuitive feel to it

Tom spoke on the iPod Touch, which he said was the best gadget he's ever had. It was first introduced about 3 years ago, and is equipped with wi-fi and blue tooth.
The over 100 000 apps available in the iTunes Apps Store include: Tube Map, Wimbledon, wi-fi zone, truphone (similar to Skype and can link to it), iDisc, sky sports, App Box lite (which includes ispirit level), BBCiplayer, satellites, rightmove, and translate from.
The programmes which are supplied with the iPod Touch include: Clock, Weather, Notes, and Photos. Movies can also be saved on the iPod.
The talk, sadly without Wi-Fi support, covered the broad range of capabilities of the iPod, and so it may not have been too surprising that, during, and following the customary retreat to the bar, an animated discussion on the relative costs and benefits of the iPod, the iPhone, and the (anticipated) iPad ensued.

Not sure if Lytchett meetings used to have more than 27 members, but I am sure that on th first Bournemouth meeting 32 people turned up. Wish it was like that now!

I'm only working from a (failing!) memory but I don't remember as many as 27 at Lytchett.
