Our Q&A session solved a few problems ranging from how to split clips in iMovie to how to reset your password for this web site. We then went on to look at some favourite apps including Shazam which we all tried to fool (with some but very little success) by playing music from obscure artists, the new filing app InterconneX (from Econ Technologies) for iPad and finally Hopscotch which some older members with… Read more…

A virtue of having only a few members attend a meeting is that the discussions and information sharing involves only one conversation which involves all the attendees. Today we only had 5 members attending which suited the topic which was a "Show and Tell" session where the members were invited to describe the free and cheap applications that they find useful. Given that we are expecting the summer to be over and the weather… Read more…

With yet another good turn out in spite of the hot weather, Vicky of Solutions (Bournemouth) gave her presentation on iPhoto.

After a quick tour of iPhoto's main screen, she explained the various means of obtaining support. As well as the Help menu, Apple 'find out how' tutorials are a good source of information about many Mac topics including iPhoto. She also told us that phone calls to AppleCare could be made more economically by… Read more…

John introduced the meeting with over 21 members and guests present, on a very hot evening.

We again tried some new ideas for sharing the displays to make the presentations more easily visible to members. This time, two projectors were used, and a brief discussion at the end of the meeting considered possible improvements to this… Read more…

Not to pre-empt the Q&A session scheduled for later, Alan opened the meeting with an answer to an unasked question, explaining the reasoning behind Apple's choice of name for the next incarnation of OSX, "Mavericks" - it involves a Californian beach and a dog apparently.

Mick then took the floor with a talk explaining the principles behind Cloud Computing, starting with a bit of history about how the needs… Read more…

[bold]Topics: Instant alpha & Printing labels from Address Book/Contacts.[/bold]

As John was away, Mark introduced the meeting with 20 members present.

First off was Euan, who offered us 'a cup of Instant Alpha'.
Apple's 'Instant Alpha' in Pages, Numbers and Keynote with 'Smart Selection' in Preview are two related and useful technologies. Euan covered the concepts of Channels, Masks and Adjustment layers -- with a brief exploration of… Read more…

Martin came along to talk to us above viruses and malware. As usual it was a well planned and laid out talk presenting arguments both for and against running some kind of anti-virus software. Most members seemed to be ambivalent and would be prepared to run some from time to time but accepted that the major threat to Macs was the user being careless about security. Perhaps the best reason for running some is… Read more…

We welcomed Micheal Corgan and Lionel Ogden as speakers to our meeting.

Lionel spoke first describing how he used Numbers to control the finances of WAMUG. He used a dummy setup of the spreadsheets to protect the innocent.

For a full description of his talk see the Meeting notes of the Bournemouth group meeting on the 21st of May when Lionel gave this talk.

Michael then gave us a… Read more…
