Eight members attended this meeting, in spite of the rain!

John gave us a talk about the iOS version of the Photos app, as used on the iPad.
He explained the basic editing features and showed how the images and videos are organised into Moments, Collections and Years. Individual Albums for different categories are created automatically, such as for Video, Time-lapse, Screenshots, Favourites and many others, depending on what content you… Read more…

An average turnout of 14 to hear an excellent presentation by Michael on what can be done with Preview. He showed that this app, which comes free with every Mac, has a surprising range of capabilities in dealing with both PDFs and with images. He showed that these files could be imported into the app not only from a Mac, but from a scanner, direct from a camera, and of course from external drives, CDs… Read more…

Brian demonstrated editing a movie in iMovie, explaining that most of us will have a movie camera with us with nearly all smart phones, iPads will have two each.

Using a movie taken from a small movie camera of a car trip from Salisbury to Wilton that had already been downloaded giving it a quick play to see what we have, and then making 3 copies… Read more…

A quick check round the 17 members present showed a good level of backup procedures. Quite a few use Time machine on a non-continuous basis and others had secondary backups of photos and other files. Some members used drive partitions for clones and Time Machine backups on external drives. Mick who has business documents on his computer keeps a backup off-site in case of fire or other disaster. There was a discussion about cloud… Read more…

On the hottest evening of the year so far, six gently perspiring members gathered to be welcomed by the staff of Solutions. Thankfully the basement door had been kept open all day so the room was still surprisingly comfortable for us to settle down and listen to Euan's talk on Masks and Masking.

After an introduction to the concept of masks in all their forms, Euan demonstrated the simple (but very useful) Instant… Read more…

Sheena gave a very comprehensive introduction to Facebook and reassured us that users do not have to reveal very much about themselves or their contacts to the World. Many different setting options tailor the degree of privacy and security users want. Messages and notifications can be directed to an individual, specific named people, or to a closed group. Sheena finds it a great way to keep in contact with friends, particularly those living far away… Read more…

We had seven members at this meeting, and there was only one presentation today, not two as advertised.

John talked about the Settings app on the iPad, pointing out that the iPhone settings were basically the same. He explained how to navigate through the structure of the iOS Settings pages, with some settings hidden deep within the columns and not always obvious. He mentioned that a few of the commonly used settings were… Read more…

As a complete departure from our usual fare, we had a very enjoyable presentation by Euan on the history of punctuation and how it tied in with the advent of printing and subsequently with today’s short-cuts in the form of emojis etc. Much of what Euan showed was new to most if not all of the audience, and we found that it is possible to read whole paragraphs with all the letters… Read more…
