Fareham — Apr 8th 2017

There were 13 members attending this month, and Derek gave us two interesting talks, covering WhatsApp and Yojimbo.
We moved back to the classroom for this meeting, so that Derek could use 2 projectors to show his MacBook and iPhone on different screens.

WhatsApp is a free communication app for smart phones, which includes the iPhone. The product enables "instant" communication in text, image, live video and audio.
It works with the camera on the iPhone and stores images in the Photos app library. WhatsApp sends and receives data either via the internet or over Cellular, and provides end-to-end encryption and also confirmation of receipt of messages.

Derek gave a demo that involved swapping messages and images with someone in Petersfield, only 20 miles away. However, he was somewhat hampered by the poor 4G coverage at the meeting location, and also the wifi limitations at the school, which restricts communication.
Details about WhatsApp can be found at the following link:

An interesting facility is the PC/Mac application that enables a keyboard and screen to be used with the smartphone to speed up text entry.
Also, the TechAdvisor website has some interesting tips and tricks on exploiting WhatsApp:

After the break, Derek gave us a talk about Yojimbo, which is an app designed for the Mac. It allows you to easily organise, store and retrieve small or large amounts of data, such as text, images, PDFs, serial numbers and passwords etc. Yojimbo can share data across several Macs, and there is also an iPad version but it is read-only.
Derek described how he started to use Yojimbo as part of a continuing process of data storage for his work and home life. A process that started with notebooks, then Filofax ring binders, then Lotus Notes for information, calendars and contacts and a Palm Pilot syncing to several desktop and mainframe computers. He started using Yojimbo it to replace the Palm Pilot in about 2009.

Finally, Derek showed us a video describing the scope of the Yojimbo product.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 13th May, starting as usual at 10.30am.
