WAMUG MEETING 20 Jan 2015

On a cold, wet evening, 19 of us met at Solutions, including one new member.

John Ansell gave an informative talk about alternatives to Safari, useful to know about if a website won't display properly, or if you wish to test your own website. Google Chrome is now the most widely used web browser (across all web users), and has many similarities to Safari. Mozilla Firefox is a good alternative, another is Opera. After demonstrating each of these, John recommended Firefox for a Mac still running Snow Leopard, as it is the only one still being updated. In the event of display problems with Safari, he recommended trying Firefox first, then Opera, and finally Chrome. He finished his talk by demonstrating Tor, which uses The Onion Router to keep your browsing private and anonymous. Tor was actually developed by the US Navy, and is now popular with political activists, criminals, and ordinary citizens who wish to preserve their privacy. It is slower than other browsers, but does not betray your location. John demonstrated this by going to BBC news; whereas Tor went to bbc.com and world news, the other browsers took him to UK pages.

After the teabreak, Tony ambushed us with a survey about our different Mac interests. We were quizzed about which OS we used, and what topics we would like covered. There was much laughter as suggestions for topics were interpreted as offers to do presentations! The survey will be available online for others to contribute. We look forward to the resulting topics.....

Any more contributions to the questionnaire are welcome, either completing the whole thing or just adding some comments in the final 3 questions. It's available at the following address, in both Numbers and PDF format:
