Beaminster — Jun 3rd 2014

Firstly I must apologise for the lateness in posting the report for the June meeting!

Diana Trenchard gave those present a very interesting presentation of her portable mini scanner. The mini scanner has many uses especially if one is interested in local History or family history.

Diana has kindly sent me a link to her presentation which I have included below.

Diana demonstrated a portable, battery-operated mini-scanner. It’s only disadvantage is the small area of scan, but this is more than compensated by its other features, especially its portability, and also its included ‘Stitch’ software’ That is, when scanning a much larger area, make multiple scans and the included software will stitch them together - seamlessly. All software is included on an SD card which also stores the scans. Simply remove the SD card to your computer and bingo. Other features include the fact that you can scan from a photograph album without removing the pictures from the album. Also, scans can be made of pictures while they are still hanging on the wall. Also, if you computer doesn’t accept SD cards, then a flash-drive converter is also included. Their web-site includes a brief demo (sorry about the US accent!) at:

Scan sizes are either 300 or 600 dpi.

No. of scans vary according to battery:
Alkaline 150 scans
Photo lithium 450 scans
Rechargeable 500 scans

300 dpi scan – 1.2 Mb
600 dpi scan – 1.6 Mb

Best price purchased from:
http://www.my-history.co.uk/acatalog/Flip-Pal-scanner.html

Current price £124.95, but if you scroll further down the page you will see that for an additional £20.00 they will supply a CD which contains “the Digital Creativity Suite 4.0 consisting of three useful programs to help you create and modify your images. The programs are; Adobe Photoshop Elements 12, File Centre Standard and Family Tree Heritage Platinum. The first program alone is sells for around £80 at a leading internet retailer so the suite is very good value at just £20 more than the basic scanner price.”

Forgot to mention that it words equally well on Apple Macs and PCs, with software included for both.
