Bournemouth — May 21st 2013

After a brief Q&A session dealing with a couple of Mail-related queries, the first presentation was by Lionel on how he uses Numbers to manage the WAMUG accounts. For confidentiality reasons, this was demonstrated using the accounts of Cybergeeks, an organisation with a most intriguing membership list which, spookily, happens to use precisely the same accounting structure as WAMUG.

Lionel has set up separate sheets within the same document to handle Bank Account, PayPal Account, Subscriptions, Income & Expenditure, Summary and Budget. There are additional sheets for each meeting group and Lionel used these to show how totals from one sheet can be automatically linked to cells in another. Numbers handles these links intelligently so subsequent layout adjustments to the sheets don't corrupt the link.

Lionel's presentation stimulated some useful discussion about the general use of Numbers, including handling of headings, the use of the Inspector to create pop-up menus in cells and to control hyperlinks from cells. The limitations of using Numbers as a database program were also explored.

After a coffee break, Michael gave a presentation on alternatives to iPhoto for photo management. Although most of these programs contain some image manipulation features, Michael's main concern was to be able to use his own folder structure for photo storage and then be able to catalogue and search the collection effectively. The features of a number of packages were compared (see the Dorchester meeting report for a full list) and Michael's preferred application, Media Pro, was explored in more detail. A copy of Media Pro is on offer as a prize in a competition Michael has organised – see the discussion he started on the WAMUG website ( photo storage and searching ).

A further Q&A session was then held, covering questions as diverse as changing the default Mail client, transmission of photos by email,  the implications of changing the name of a Mac or a WiFi network, the use of DropCopy as an alternative to DropBox or Airdrop for filesharing over a LAN, running MS Word on an old Mac and how to get Calendar or Reminders to nag you more persistently!

All in all, another varied and enjoyable meeting, reasonably well attended.
