Bournemouth — Mar 19th 2013

The meeting opened with a presentation by Mick Burrell on the subject of email and the differences between POP and IMAP accounts. He explained in detail how they work behind the scenes, and pointed out the problems that can arise particularly when synchronising between a number of mobile devices and a Mac at home. There was a good deal of interest and several questions were posed generating a lively discussion. Members expressed their appreciation for this helpful presentation.

After a chatty coffee break, Alan started the Q&A session asking how to get video from his ancient, Firewire output only camcorder into his brand new Thunderbolt port only MacBook Air. The assorted cables he had brought with him were looked at and the appropriate two chosen by Dean Brooke. Dean is an Apple Certified Macintosh Technician and Apple Certified Support Professional and mends Macs at Solutions; he co-hosted our meeting with Katie in the absence on holiday of Christopher. Several other questions were discussed (and some solved!), including the transfer of files between Macs using iCloud, emailing of Groups, a difficulty playing back TV programmes and a downloading problem to an iPad. Finally, the iPad was criticised because turning pages when reading a book on your back in bed was tricky!

I'd had all sorts of recommendations for the cables to use but no joy. Amongst these, Dean Brooke saw that I had a Firewire cable that would connect to my camcorder and to Apple's Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter (which I also had). Joy at last!
