Have tried to send today but no joy. This is the same on my iMac (OS 10.6.8), also on an older iMac and iPad. (Mail is v 4.6.). I can access the internet, as this message proves! Network prefs show Airport is connected but Ethernet and Firewire are not. A network dialogue box has come up saying, "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address". I use a Netgear router DG834G v3. There are three green lights showing on the router but none of the four numbers are 'alive'. I have unplugged and replugged the router and have restarted the iMac but still no joy. Any suggestions as to what I should check now? My guess was that the problem was somehow to do with my iPad also being more or less permanently logged into my .mac email account (e-mail settings were synched via iTunes). I got rid of the synching via iTunes and switched to using the iCloud and all was well. It felt like a case of Apple 'persuading' us to get up to date and use the system the way they want us to, but that's probably just paranoia!
