Safari and quick time components

Hi ..When trying to view a PDF file within Safari I get the quick time logo with a broken question mark in it. I have worked around this by right clicking on the PDF and downloading it. However today I got the same error message when I wanted to see the start times for the Tirreno Adriatico cycling road race today. Here is the link if anyone else wants to try it http://www.gazzetta.it/Speciali/TirrenoAdriatico/download/2012/OrdinePartenzaCronometro.pdf I was directed to the Quick time home page for components http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=24ffd5&csubtype=c00ece1e My question is does anyone know which component I need for the PDF error ? Hi Thomas, Apple has just posted Safari 5.1.4 (12-13th March) via software update and elsewhere. The bug fix list includes attention to .pdfs which may help you, although no previous Safari has caused .pdf difficulty here. As always it is helpful to quote your OS version and application version which may make the issue easier to track down. Hope this helps. Thanks for that Euan ..I'm off to download the new version and see if it makes any difference .....sorry for not leaving my softwear details ....basically I am running the latest version of everything 10.7.3 and I'm a core 2 duo .

Just downloaded the new version ....restarted computer ...reset Safari ....still get the error message and sent to the quick time components page

hmmmm I think I will stick to the work around of downloading them .....the alternative looks very complicated with lot's of deleting files in Library and plists .......thanks for flagging it up Euan Tom

Hi Thomas, Never had these problems here, but the sensible suggestion to look at Apple Discussions came from Martin Spenceley to whom you should doff your cap, not me! But to build on that suggestion, below are the contents of my > /Library/Internet Plug-ins < folder with version numbers where they seem relevant. Sometimes whisking files in and out of folders on a "someone suggested" basis can lead to more issues -- these files have dependencies which installers know about, and you can have the correct file name, even the correct file version, but may have lost the appropriate dependency. Many people avoid Adobe Acrobat Reader (using Preview instead) and Reader isn't part of the Lion installation, so should not be necessary to read PDFs. However I find its print and other options very useful sometimes, as also Adobe Flash. If you were to use appropriate un-installers for old Reader and Flash files, and then install the latest versions from Adobe.com (plus Quicktime 7.1.1) It just might help. It may help to do the usual housework: safe boot followed by normal restart, using Onyx to clear caches, permissions repair and disc verification. Onyx Caches: a 'bad' font lurking in the font caches can cause real problems which are hard to trace, Acrobat uses several special fonts to do the PDF magic which is why uninstalling using the uninstaller, and then reinstalling the latest version of Reader having cleared the font caches may help you. Do you remember installing something just before this problem arose? Whoops! No tabs on our website. To save confusion, version numbers and comments follow the file names, > xxx < is a path from an alias to the original, (xxx) brackets are the bundle enclosing folder version numbers. To see inside a bundle, press Control when opening it, but be careful about replacing a file within a bundle, unless you are Martin (who knows about these things). It is better to update the bundle folder with a fresh but correct bundle folder -- perhaps from a clone.
