I may try syncing the phone with my MacBook instead to see whether the issue persists. Guided by Mick, I logged onto my iCloud a/c on iCloud.com and was able to establish that my contacts were recorded there. Then on my iPhone I checked my iCloud settings and after I put my password in, the contacts appeared - an obvious slip up with hindsight but I was thrown by the syncing window in iTunes which didn't show any of my Address Book groups, so I thought the problem lay on my iMac - thanks Mick.
