It will store the original photo, the "photo" file (?s) that records all the editing you may have done, plus thumbnail images with aliases. Make sure you have backed up your "pictures" folder before you do any clearing out, and be very careful to choose only the files you want to remove (use "Get Info" (cmnd-i) to check.
