As the drive still has over 700Gb free it can't be because it's filling up too quickly! I did wonder why it seemed to be backing up so constantly, and in fact the last back-up was on July 13th, but I was fooled by the constant rotation of the icon in the menu bar. Further, it doesn't respond to being told to stop backing up. I have turned off the external drive, ejected it and remounted it, but to no avail. So TM is back in business, albeit with an 8-day hiatus.
