Since then a new 64bit Audacity programme has been released which not only seems to have overcome the reliability problem but now includes the ability to export a host of file formats including mp3 without separately downloading the LAME add-on. In the meantime I have been using (and struggling with) GarageBand which is more tuned to music creation. I highly recommend Audacity which is free and has a comprehensive manual which you can access on-line or download.
