In Mail prefs under Viewing, I have ticked "Show most recent messages at the top". I had overlooked that click which I now find works in most of the boxes. However there is one sender who uses two different email addresses and his messages appear in the middle of the column. The click arrow in that case is at the top of the sender column. On all the others it's at the top of the date sent column. Not a great problem now that you have pointed me to the click arrow.
