The instruction to refer to iTunes probably refers to such a backup, and see “Option 1” in the web page referenced below. If you didn’t, at worst you may have to “reconstruct” your iPhone data from any other resources you may have after resetting it to “Factory settings”. Always make sure you are fully backed up especially before a major OS update (iTunes for iOS, clone for OSX) Mostly there will be no problem, but just sometimes… This OSX Daily web page may offer useful information (see “Option 1”), and there will be others out there: iOS 8 “Update Cannot be Installed Because it Requires GB of Storage”?
