Okay everyone, if you have problems with your printer after downloading Mavericks re- install the printer and restart the computer.
The printer will now print, well it worked for me after spending nearly 2 days on various websites, Apple and Epson included none of which could define 'printer filter'.

Sorry Mick, did not read your reply to my posting before doing exactly what you suggested! I gave the problem some thoughts whilst participating in a drop of 'falling over juice' with my lunch and that seemed to do the trick!
