Dorchester — Apr 14th 2009

John opened the meeting, with 14 members present.

Mark provided a demonstration of iWeb, which he introduced by showing us some examples of websites which he had created. IWeb offers a variety of styles and templates to start with, and it is possible to set up an eye-catching site with no knowledge of HTML. As one would expect, there are good links to material produced using Apple's other iLife programmes, and good support with web hosting on .mac, although other providers can also be used, with some constraints.

David then demonstrated how Wine can be used to run Windows applications on the Mac, without the need for a copy of the Windows operating system. The version of Wine available for the Mac ( http://www.winehq.org/ ) is less advanced than that available for Linux computers, but seems to be capable of running simple, or older Windows programmes quite capably. Wine is an Open Source application; Crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/ ) is similar and more capable, but is being developed on a commercial basis (and is helping to support the work on Wine).

Our Q&A session came up with a query as to whether there was any sort of Mac equivalent to Microsoft Publisher. John suggested that perhaps the nearest would be Print Shop 2, which he had demonstrated to the group last December. (It does seem that running Publisher is too demanding a task for the current version of Wine.)

To conclude, Euan showed us a movie which he had developed using iMovie. As with iweb, iMovie has the capability to import the products of the other members of the iLife suite seamlessly, and also has very flexible arrangements for scrolling text (for titles and credits), for making transitions, and for dynamically zooming in, or panning, using static photographs.
