Bournemouth — Mar 20th 2018

Euan began with a short history of developments and advances in desktop publishing from his first encounters with PageMaker, through the introduction of full digital setting and layout in about 1986, to the more recently added features all the way to the current version of QX.

Significant recent developments have been driven by the increasingly varied platforms that the final product (ie the document) may be viewed on. As well as PDF files and the printed page, increasingly, products need to be targeted towards phones, tablets and e-readers so QX aims to simplify this task through the incorporation of XML and Job Jackets to help preserve house style across the different versions.

Another recent shift has been the progressive inclusion of more image editing facilities, reducing the need for users to switch back and forth between QX and PhotoShop.

After a coffee break (Thanks to Debbie of All Fired Up for excellent service) the second part of Euan’s talk consisted of hands-on demonstrations of some of the features, including the manuals and tutorials, as well as a new range of videos, all of which are available to view, whether or not you are a QX licence holder. In response to a question about the price of all this functionality, Euan observed “Some people go on holiday to Greece, I buy upgrades to Quark”!

The evening was rounded off with the usual Q&A session, this time covering mail memory usage on an iPad and what to do when Safari refuses to quit.
