Euan Williams gave us a very interesting presentation about type, logos and layout, and the influence of printing technology on design, “Twiddling Type”.

After some conceptual quotations from several leading European type designers he discussed line and letter spacing options in Apple’s Pages application showing how adjustments to leading, kerning and column width can make the words read and fit better. Some advanced typographic features within the professional QuarkXpress and inDesign were also briefly covered.

Euan introduced us to ways to adapt type to create logotypes using vector graphics software — and to experiment with type design using the (free, open source) FontForge software.

He discussed changing layout fashions in book and newspaper design, and ended with a quick look at old and new printing methods, such as ‘hand’ setting, Linotype, Intertype and Monotype typesetting machines (hot metal, photo-setting) and developments in ‘direct to plate’ digital type composition.

This was an interesting, informative and understandable talk taking the whole meeting with a break halfway for questions, tea and coffee.
