Bournemouth — Jul 16th 2013

With yet another good turn out in spite of the hot weather, Vicky of Solutions (Bournemouth) gave her presentation on iPhoto.

After a quick tour of iPhoto's main screen, she explained the various means of obtaining support. As well as the Help menu, Apple 'find out how' tutorials are a good source of information about many Mac topics including iPhoto. She also told us that phone calls to AppleCare could be made more economically by calling an Applestore and pressing 2. Also, Vicky and the other staff at Solutions are always happy to help and can arrange one-to-one sessions if wanted.

Various means of importing photos into iPhoto were covered, together with the way these are split into Events. Adding titles to Events was demonstrated, as was the facility to change the 'caption' picture by moving the pointer across an Event and pressing the space bar when the desired photo appears.

Next, the Faces and Places features were demonstrated. The latter is easiest with a geo-tagging camera, but the tagging can also be done within iPhoto.

Vicki then demonstrated some of the editing features of iPhoto, such as the quick fixes (e.g. Cropping, Straightening, Red eye removal and the Enhance and Retouch tools), Effects (Vignette, Sepia etc.) and finally the more advanced Adjustments (sharpness, tint, temperature, exposure, histograms etc.). Individual editing steps can be undone at any time during the editing session and, because iPhoto editing is non-destructive, it is always possible to revert to the original photograph.

There are many ways of sharing photos, e.g. by burning a disc, using e-mail or social media, ordering prints, or via Photo Stream. A photo emailed from iPhoto won't appear in your 'Sent Items'  box, so it's a good idea to send a copy to yourself.

Vicky demonstrated iPhoto's flexible Slideshows facilities and closed the presentation by looking at Projects, i.e. Books, Calendars and Cards. The Auto layout facility makes it easy to start them and they can then be extensively customised. For example, as well as the photos for the months of a calendar, selected birthdays can be added together with text and pictures for printing on the appropriate day.

Vicky's presentation was very well received and the resulting discussion covered topics such as removing duplicate photos (Duplicate Annihilator was recommended), locating missing photos after iPhoto to Aperture migration or a change of computer, and the merit or otherwise of using multiple iPhoto libraries.

After a coffee break, there was a more general Q&A covering region coding on DVDs, recovered messages in Mail, draft e-mail messages hanging around after they had been sent, and AOL being a bit over-zealous in rejecting bulk addressed messages.

It was noted that a new WAMUG group at Beaminster had been formed and was doing well. Also the slide scanner has completed its initial rounds and is now on a second circuit; Bournemouth attendees should contact Alan if they are interested.

There is no Bournemouth group meeting in August, but we will re-convene in September to hear Euan talk, possibly on Hard drives and SSDs, plus another yet-to-be-determined topic (suggestions to Alan, please!). Christopher of Solutions also noted that the new incarnation of OSX (Mavericks) may well be around by then.
