Bournemouth — Jun 19th 2012

Attendance figures were maintained in spite of an important event in Ukraine (England’s game in Euro 2012 football!), 14 members participating in a lively meeting.

Alan opened by showing several images recently taken for use on the WAGs website. The Q&A session followed with points raised on Photoshop versions used on past OS versions, iPad 1, virus protection and Java. Lionel gave a warning about Java malware and Mick pointed out that most Mac users will not need to use Java. There is more on this subject from Euan on our discussion board dated 1 May 2012.

Lionel gave us a detailed look at Dropbox which is a synchronisation, file sharing and remote storage application which can be used by and between Mac, PC, iOS and Android machines. The basic version is free giving 2GB of online storage which can be increased for a fee.
In addition to online storage, it is possible also to share files in two ways. First, a file can be shared as ‘read only’ using an URL; this is called linking and the recipient does not need to have installed Dropbox.  Secondly, a folder can be shared for collaborative working (all those sharing the folder must have Dropbox installed).  It is then treated as ‘native’ and can be modified or edited.
Lionel told us that Dropbox is very easy to use, whether for synchronising documents between machines or sharing files. See:  Dropbox.

After the break Alan gave us his views on the iPad. He discussed its benefits and failings (in his opinion) and stimulated many ideas and recommendations from the members. Alan listed his main uses. One was presentations at family events but he had found it very tricky to organise photos using the iPad. He also confessed to playing games including a form of Scrabble called Words with Friends, and demonstrated a fun app called Stickman (go for it!).

Finally, there was general agreement to have no meeting in August. July’s meeting will include pieces on Short Cuts and Photoshop.
