Bournemouth — Oct 18th 2011

The meeting space at Solutions has been partitioned off and is effectively halved in size -and of course this turned out to be the biggest attendance in a long while - 20 people came along to listen to THE iChat guru, Ralph Johns. So we were cramped a little but managed to squeeze everybody in.

Before he started there was time for a short Q & A session - it seems that both iOS5 and Lion have some teething troubles! One problem has surfaced on the iPhone in that any separate folder of photos that has previously been used for automatic sync-ing of shots from other cameras has been duplicated, and that in these supplementary folders there is no provision for deleting either individual photos or the whole folder.

His presentation was to be in three parts. The first was a dazzling array of technical knowledge - possibly too technical for most of those present who really only want to know how to use iChat and to find out about any hidden extras that can be used. But Ralph showed his deep and complete knowledge of the application, detailing the set-up required for different versions of iChat and giving chapter and verse as to which did what in the deep innards of our Macs and routers or modems. Port numbers were specified and a whole alphabet of initials went by on the screen

This complete run-down of the background workings occupied the first part of the evening, and after a break for teas and coffees - and good biscuits too! - Ralph went on to talk about the properties of iChat itself. In the end we ran out of time and so were only able to have the second of the three parts - maybe we’ll get him to come back and go through the last part at a future meeting!

It was very unfortunate that the wi-fi internet connection at Solutions chose that evening to go down - Ralph had taken the precaution of coming in to test it during the week before, when it worked perfectly. Still we all should now know a lot more about iChat!

For those people who came to Bournemouth for the first time, please be aware that the
great majority of our evenings don’t get down to the level of specialisation that Ralph was able to present!

To round the evening off no less that 15 people went on to enjoy a meal at the friendly Italian restaurant!
